Margie McGahey’s remarkable career in country music began at WORM 101.7 in Savannah, Tennessee, where she gained invaluable experience in small-market radio and discovered a lasting passion for connecting artists with their audiences. When she moved to Nashville, Margie joined the Country Music Association, where she was mentored by industry legends Irving Waugh and Jo Walker-Meadow. During her time with CMA, she contributed to the CMA Awards shows in 1989 and 1990, helping shape one of the industry’s most iconic events. In 1989, Margie began what would become a 35-year tenure with WSM Radio and the Grand Ole Opry. While she excelled in sales, her true specialty—and her enduring legacy—lies in sponsorships and promotions. Her creativity, professionalism, and deep understanding of audience engagement played a vital role in sustaining and elevating these historic institutions for more than three decades. Margie’s career is distinguished by countless moments that reflect her devotion to country music and its fans. She worked alongside Bobby Bare at Opryland’s “Bobby Bare Trap,” coordinated WSM listener trips to Alabama’s June Jam, and created opportunities for fans to connect personally with artists such as Alabama, Alan Jackson, and Lorrie Morgan. Her work consistently strengthened the bond between artists and the people who love them. In 2005, Margie helped launch a special project that would grow into the WSM Listener Contest. Through her ingenuity, persistence, and love of country music, the contest became a beloved and long-running success, thriving until 2020. Her drive did not stop there. Margie was instrumental in creating An Intimate Evening, hosted by Eddie Stubbs, a program designed to spotlight emerging artists. When a hesitant artist proved difficult to secure, Margie turned to her friend Merle Haggard, who simply asked, “Will this help you?” His appearance revitalized the program and inspired a decade of conversations with rising talent. Another project especially meaningful to Margie is Opry Country Classics, created by Larry Gatlin. Together, Larry and Margie partnered with the George Jones Museum to design an intimate setting that brought Opry audiences into a new, up-close experience. The series showcased classic performances from legendary artists alongside rising stars, with Larry hosting conversations and live music in a warm, personal atmosphere. This collaboration gave emerging talent the rare opportunity to perform beside their heroes and strengthened the connection between artists, fans, and the rich heritage of country music.
